TIPS FOR TRAVELERS

Juneau is a landlocked city so the only way to get there is by ferry. Because reservations are required, it is a good idea to make them well in advance of your trip and then confirm them a few days before you are to leave by calling the Alaska Marine Highway System, 800-642-0066 for reservations and 907-465-3940 (their office at 1591 Glacier Ave) for schedule information. It is recommended that you plan on spending at least three to five days in Juneau so you have plenty of time to see the sights and soak up the beauty. To insure your reservation is honored you must arrive at the ferry and check in at least two hours before the scheduled departure time.

Because parking spaces are at a premium downtown and the streets are very narrow, it's probably a good idea to leave your rig parked and use the city bus system to get to downtown Juneau and Douglas Island.

Since in the hottest month in Juneau, which is August, the day time temperature only goes up to around 63 degrees, you are going to want to keep a sweater or jacket handy. At night the low gets down into the mid 40s, so you also might want to pack some snugly jammies and an extra blanket or two. Also because you're probably going to be doing a lot of exploring be sure to pack your most comfortable pair of sturdy shoes. Since I hear they grow the mosquitoes extra healthy up there, you might want to pack some extra bug protection. You may also want to keep an umbrella handy as summer rains are pretty common.

Does one of your traveling companions consider chasing a ball a form of aerobic exercise? Then you'll be glad to know that, in case of an emergency, you can contact the vets at the Juneau Veterinary Hospital, 8367 Old Dairy Rd., 907-789-3444; or the Southeast Alaska Veterinary Hospital, 7691 Glacier Hwy., 907-789-7551.
