SIGHT SEEING

Surrounded by all of this natural beauty, you're going to want to spend some time in the great outdoors exploring. A great way to start this adventure is by taking one of the free guided hikes that Juneau offers on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 907-586-5226. You'll be so charged up after this first short hike that you'll want to stop by the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Davis Log Cabin, 134 Third St., 907-586-2201, to pick up copies of their free trail information. If you see a bike trail you'd like to explore, but don't have a bike with you, you can rent one at Mountain Gears, 126 Front St, 907-586-4327.

If you think of biking as too tame, head on over to the folks at Alaska Discovery, 5310 Glacier Hwy, 907-780-6226; 800-586-1911, for an adventure kayaking experience you'll never forget. Or you may want to take a helicopter ride for a glacier walk on the Juneau Icefield, with the help of Temsco Helicopters, 1650 Maplesden Way 907-789-9501. For more high flying adventure, take the Mount Roberts Tramway, 490 S Franklin, 907-463-3412, 888-461-8726, from the cruise-ship piers up 2,000 feet to mountain top nature trails and a great view of the city.

If, as you walk or bike along, you find the perfect fishing hole be sure you buy a fishing license from one of the local stores, like Fishermen's Bend, 11957 Glacier Hwy., 907-789-7312, before you drop your line. If what you want to see is a really big fish, hook up with the folks at Auk Nu Tours, 76 Egan Dr, 907-586-8687, 800-722-0741; or Woodwind Adventures, 1253 Airport Rd,Gustavus, AK, 99826, 907-697-2282, both of which will be glad to take you out whale watching in the Icy Strait or on one of their many other adventure tours.

History buffs will enjoy touring the beautiful St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 326 5th St, 907-586-1023. In 1894 when the church was built, the parishioners wanted it to be special so they decided to cover the onion-shaped dome in gold. If you are in town on Sunday, you will still find services conducted here at 10:00 a.m. in English, Old Slavonic, and Tlingit. To see how some of these early Alaskan adventurers lived, drop in at the House of Wickersham, 213 7th St, 907-586-9001, 800-789-6172. Visiting here will give you insight into the lives of the well-to-do in 1898 when this house was built for a local judge.
