HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-65 & I-10

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 202,181

The first French settlers arrived in 1702 and chose a place near current day Mobile. After surviving a flood in 1711 they decided it would be wise to relocate to higher ground and moved their town to its present spot. In 1763 the town passed into English hands, with the Spanish taking control in 1780. Not having any luck claiming it as part of the Louisiana Purchase (1803), the United States finally took control for good during the War of 1812. An important port during the Civil War, it managed to remain open until August 1864 when it was captured by the Union fleet. The town of Mobile held out another seven months before it too fell under Union control.
