HIGHLIGHTS

Originally settled by more than one hundred Native American tribes, Hernan Cortes visited in the early 16th century and decided to name it California after an imaginary island in a then popular Spanish romance. Gold fever struck in January 1848 in Colma with James W. Marshall's discovery of the sparkley stuff. Still known as the Golden State, our 3rd largest land area has more people than any other, a statistical honor it has held since 1962. With its population growing 25.7% from 1980 to 1990 it will probably hold its place at the head of the line for a while to come.

If you love theme parks, you've come to the right state. Disneyland, Anaheim; Sea World, San Diego; Busch Gardens, Van Nuys; Knott's Berry Farm, Buena Park; and Universal Studios, Universal City; all call California home. After you've marveled at what humans can create, you can switch to natural wonders by visiting the Mojave Desert, the Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley National Park, Redwood National Park, Yosemite National Park, and Sequoia National Park.

If Los Angeles is one of your stops, you can choose from the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Natural History Museum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Beit HaShoa Museum of Tolerance, the Museum of African-American Art, the Hollywood Studio Museum, and the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. If you are going to be in the San Fernando Valley, visit the Ronald Regan Presidential Library, Sim Valley.

At San Simeon you can see the Hearst-San Simeon State Historical Monument. If you've always wanted to see an imprint of Trigger's hooves or Jimmy Durante's nose, a visit to Hollywood's Mann's Chinese Theater will help you fulfill your dream. Hollywood also has the Max Factor Museum and Walk of Fame, with over 2500 bronze-inlaid stars. Besides great beaches, San Diego has the Maritime Museum with a 1904 British steam yacht and 1898 ferryboat. Part of Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo has over 100 acres and is one of the finest zoos in the world. Here you can see the Tiger River, Sun Bear Forest, and Gorilla Tropics.

Besides the beauty of its beaches, Santa Barbara has the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Zoo, the Museum of Natural History, and Mission Santa Barbara. San Francisco has bragging rights for the oldest and largest municipal museum in the West with its M. H. deYoung Memorial Museum. Here you will also find the California Academy of Sciences, Chinatown, cable cars, the Golden Gate bridge, the Steinhart Aquarium, the Wells Fango History Museum, Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. And for those of you who like something different, San Francisco has the Tattoo Art Museum. If that doesn't just make your trip perfect, try the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum.

That's right folks, there's something for everyone in California.
