JULIAN SNAP-SHOT Return to State Index Does your ideal get away include beautiful scenery, yummy dining, and fun shopping? Then Julian is your kind of town.
In 1869, a shout was raised of "there's gold in them thar hills" in San Diego's pine forested back country. Less than one year later, Julian was all grown up with five stores, two cafes, two blacksmith shops, two hotels, two livery stables, eight saloons, and one church. Not wanting to depend on just gold, the local folks started planting apple trees. You'll be thankful they showed this foresight when you taste the wonderful apple pies sold by several local bakeries. Just strolling down Main Street will give you a chance to sample the goodies at the Apple Alley Bakery, the Julian Cafe & Bakery, the Julian Pie Company, and Mom's Pie House. If you've always wanted to try candied apples, you'll want to head to the highly recommended Candied Apple Pastry Company in the old firehouse at the corner of 4th and 78. They also offer many other goodies to tempt you!
Naturally you are going to need to walk off some of those calories and a great way to do that is by going from store to store (and yes, men I can hear your groaning loud and clear). Just some of the places you'll want to spend time are Julian Bell, Book and Candle, the Old Julian Garage, and Applewood and Company.
Those of you who prefer outdoor fun will want to tour the Eagle and High Peak Mine 760-765-0036, take a trail ride at the Julian Stables, or let a little llama lead the way at Leelin Llama Treks, 1-800-526-2725. If you are really feeling adventurous, you can get in touch with the folks at Sky Sailing, 760-782-0404, where they will take you on a gilder trip over the mountains and valleys surrounding Julian. Want something tamer? Then head down to the Menghini Winery, 760-765-2072, to sample their local wines or just enjoy the beauty of their working vineyards and apple orchards.
What you'll give up in dry camping, you'll more than make up for in view, if you manage to snag a spot along Lake Cuyamaca, just outside Julian on Hwy. 79. If you want the convenience of full hookups, a swimming pool, and a country store, you'll enjoy your stay at the Stagecoach Trails RV, Equestrian, & Wildlife Resort, 7878 Great Southern Overland Stage Route, Julian, 760-765-2197.
If when you leave town, you find yourself headed east on Highway 79 toward Highway 78 in Santa Ysabel, be sure and stop at Dudley's Bakery, 30281 Hwy 78, 760-765-0488, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. This bakery prides itself on its huge selection of yummy breads, pantries, and pies and for good reason. We tried some of each and found it to be delicious!
