Can you picture sending home a post card saying, "Having a great time here in "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Poricuncula!"? Well that was the first official name of Los Angeles when it was founded in 1781. Translated it means "the Village of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Poricncula" and it's not hard to figure out why it was soon shortened.

Isolated from the East, Los Angeles didn't really start to take off until the arrival of railroads in 1876 and 1885. This opened the area up to farmers, vacationers, and, in the 1920s, hopeful starlets perched on stools at the local malt shop.
