HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-8, I-5, & I-805

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 1,220,666

Drawn by its deepwater harbor, several Spanish explorers visited here in the 1500s but it wasn't until 1769 that Spain set up a permanent settlement.

That year Father Junipero Serra and his group started building California's first mission and presidio. Growth of this little fur trading town was slow until 1827 when San Diego decided to go into the cattle hide exporting business. After becoming part of the United States in 1846, it became an important whaling center for about the next 20 years.
