What's the easiest way to get there? Drive to the Old Town Transit Center, downtown and hop on one of their San Diego Trolley for a 45 minute ride that will take you to the border, 619-233-3004, and then just walk across.
Only 127 miles away you'll find Los Angeles, CA and lots of fun things to see like Mann's Chinese Theater, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the Queen Mary, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the J Paul Getty Museum, the Southwest Museum, the Gene Autry Museum, the Fort MacArthur Military Museum, shopping along Rodeo Drive, and more theme parks than you can shake a stick at!
Closer by, at just 60 miles north, you'll find Temecula, CA. Here you'll find lots of wineries right off I-15, a fun Blue Grass Festival in July, the Temeku Golf Course, great shopping and dining in Old Town Temecula, the Lake Skinner Recreation Area, the Temecula Valley Museum, and several hot-air balloon companies just waiting to give you a bird's eye view of the area.
Just an hour away from San Diego and 15 miles from Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the colorful little town of Julian, CA, Chamber of Commerce, P O Box 413, Julian, CA, 92036, 760-765-1857. Perched at 4,235 foot elevation, this mountain top town features wildflowers in May, refreshingly cool temperatures in the summer, and a splashy show of colors in the fall. A great place to start your Julian tour is right downtown. Here you'll find neat antique stores, historic buildings, carriage rides, craft shops, gift stores, and fun restaurants. You'll also want to visit the great local fruit stands and wineries. Want to explore some of the area surrounding Julian? Then be sure and stop in at the Chamber of Commerce office, in the historic Town Hall, for a copy of their maps and brochures.
If you love outdoor beauty, before you leave the area, you'll want to spend some time at the William Heise County Park, off Pine Hill Road, 760-694-3366. Here you'll find wonderful pine forest, meadows, and with any luck will spot some of the local residents like Mule Deer as you wander the hiking trails. If you'd like a little critter to hike along with you, you'll find both llama hikes and donkey treks offered in Julian.
