Outdoor lovers will enjoy a trip to the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Rd., Route 243 or Route 115, Ansonia, CT, 203-736-9360. As you stroll around this 104-acre park, you'll find native fern and wildflower gardens, and more than 2 miles of nature trails. Before you head out you might want to grab your fishing license, rod and reel, and loaded picnic basket because they also have great places for a lazy lunch and fishing.

Shoppers will want to rush to Riverdale Farms Shopping, I-84 exit 39, then take Route 10 north to Avon, CT, 860-677-6437. In this old restored dairy barn, you'll find unique stores with antiques, gifts, clothing, jewelry, oriental rugs, and equestrian goodies. Book lovers will want to stop in at the Whitlock Farm Book Barn, 20 Sperry Road, take Route 69, 4 miles north of Wilbur Cross Parkway, Bethany, CT, 860-393-1240. Here you'll find two barns chock full of books, maps, prints, and all sorts of neat stuff, all at about 1/2 of retail.

If you kind of miss being a "clock watcher," then you'll want to drop in at the American Clock and Watch Museum, 100 Maple Street, Bristol, CT, 860-583-6070. Here you'll find more than 3,000 clocks and watches in a post revolutionary home. If you'd be curious to see how prisoners used to be treated, visit the Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine, Newgate Road, East Granby, CT, Wednesday-Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 860-566-3005. This site holds the double distinction of being America's first chartered copper mine (1707) and the place where "British sympathizers" were held captive during the American Revolution. It continued in its capacity as a prison for the state of Connecticut until 1827.

A side trip to East Haven will give you a chance to take a 3-mile ride through the shoreline woods over a trolley line that's been in use since 1900. The Shoreline Trolley Museum, 17 River Street, I-95 North exit 51, 203-467-7635, will also give you a chance to enjoy their hands-on exhibits, interpretive tours, and picnic grove. Here you'll find more than 40 vintage trolley cars, some as old as 1884. They also offer a 3-mile ride through the New England countryside, a picnic area, a gift shop, and snack bar. Right next door is the Connecticut Fire Museum, 860-623-4732, where you can learn about the history of fire fighting and see several old time engines.
