HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAY: I-10

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 58,193

Though they had traveled this area as early as 1559, the Spanish did not settle here permanently until 1696. Switched from Spanish, to French, back to Spanish, English and then once again back to Spanish control, this area was captured by Andrew Jackson for the US in 1814. After it was turned back over to Spain, Andrew returned in 1818 and took it again. Yet Pensacola didn't officially become part of the United States until 1821.
