MUSEUMS

A visit to the Historic Pensacola Village, 205 E Zaragoza St., 850-595-5985, will take you back through 200 years of Florida history. You'll see artifacts and buildings, like the Manuel Barrios Cottage left by early Florida pioneers, and learn about what life was like during the French, Spanish, and English occupations. You'll also get to step back in time at the Museum of Commerce and the Museum of Industry.

For more Florida history drop by the T T Wentworth Jr Florida State Museum, 330 S Jefferson St., 850-595-5985, to see not only a wonderful building but to learn about West Florida history You'll also find a hands-on Discovery Museum for children on the 3rd floor. Or stop in at the Pensacola Historical Museum, 115 E Zaragoza St, 850-433-1559, where you can enjoy changing geology, maritime history, and history exhibits.

Next stop on your history tour is at the Civil War Soldiers Museum, 108 South Palafox Place, 850-469-1900. Touring this 4,200 square foot museum will give you a chance to see uniforms, equipment, weapons, and one of the Nation's largest displays of Civil War medical artifacts collections.

Always dreamed of being Indiana Jones? Then you'll enjoy touring the 8,000 square foot Archaeology Institute, University of West Florida, Building 89, 1000 University Dr, 850-474-3015. Here you can view some of the treasures found by real life archaeologists on the University staff.

Since Pensacola is home to the world renown Blue Angels, it's not surprising to find the National Museum of Naval Aviation, Building 3465, Naval Air Station, 3465 Redford Blvd, 850-452-2389 800-327-5002, also calling Pensacola home. Here you'll find exhibits on naval aviation's beginnings, the age of astronauts, spacecraft, jets, 130 authentic historic aircraft, the only F-14 Tomcat on public display, an aircraft carrier deck, four real F-14 military fight training simulators complete with actual controls, and the Naval Aviation Memorial IMAX Theater, 1750 Redford Blvd, use the west entrance to NAS Pensacola at the end of Blue Angel Highway, 850-453-2389, with its wonderful films, including The Magic of Flight. Expect to spend some time as this is one of the three largest air and space museums in the world and only one of two with F-14 flight training simulators!

Before leaving town you'll also want to soak up some of the beauty offered at the Penscola Museum of Art, 407 South Jefferson Street, 850-432-6247. A visit here will give you a chance to enjoy a wide variety of rotating exhibits by artist such as Salvador Dali, Charles Lewis Tiffany, and Jean Pagliuso.
