SIGHT SEEING

One of the stops you'll want to make on your historical sight seeing tour is the North Hill Preservation District, for a map stop at the Visitors Center, 1401 E Gregory Street, 800-874-1234. Located in the area of the original Spanish and British forts, this residential district has over 500 restored homes. While you are at the Visitors Center, you will also want to pick up a guide for the Seville Historic District, which has Creole and Victorian homes dating as early as the 1780s.

Then head to Gulf Islands National Seashore for a chance to spot some of the birds and animals that call this area home. If you are an avid bird watcher be prepared to spend some time. Over 280 different species have been spotted here.

Want a chance to see even more animals? Then head to the Zoo Of Northwest Florida and Botanical Gardens, 5701 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Gulf Breeze, FL, 850-932-2229, where you can visit more than 900 animals, including lowland gorillas, and enjoy the beauty of the botanical gardens featuring native plants.

For outdoor fun, you'll want to spend some time roaming the white sand beaches and splashing in the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. If you are traveling with kids, they will enjoy roaming through Fort Pickens, on Pensacola Beach. Or to combine outdoor fun with a bit of history, head instead to the Colonial Archaeological Trail, Seville Square, 850-595-5985. Wandering through these archaeological digs will give you a chance to view a 1771-1821 kitchen foundation, a British well, and the ruins of a commanding officer's house.

Want a little more action than beach walking? Then try a canoe trip down Coldwater Creek, hike the trails of the Big Lagoon State Recreation Area, and snorkel, scuba-dive, jet ski, or just enjoy the spectacular view off Bay Bluffs Park. If fishing thrills you, be prepared to hear your heart pound as you reel in grouper, red snapper, and triggerfish, or tackle the big ones like tuna and Spanish Mackerel.

Want to get even closer to the fish? Then head 24 miles southeast of town to the Mighty Oriskany. This retired aircraft carrier (1945-1976), found a new way to serve when it was successfully reefed in 2006. Now the world's largest artificial reef it is just waiting for you to come down and explore.
