GOOD FOOD

Want to eat like a native? Then you'll have to try fried green tomatoes, sweet potato pie, okra, greens, and grits. One of the best ways to try good ol' southern cookin' Atlanta style is to head to Mary Mac's Tea Room, 224 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, 404-876-1800, for lunch. Though it may take you longer to wait in line than to order your food, get served, and eat, the fried chicken and cracklin' cornbread make it well worth the wait. But, once you're served, they do like a quick turnover so don't come here planning to dawdle.

If you want some of the Colonel's chicken and a chance to see a local landmark, head to the Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant, 12 N Cobb Parkway, Marietta, GA, 770-422-4716, where you'll find not only finger-licken good chicken but also the 56 foot tall Big Chicken! And better yet, if you haven't figured out what little trinket to buy the folks back home, they sell Big Chicken souvenirs which are bound to delight someone in your family.

Does a hot dog sound better? Then head on over to the world's largest drive in, The Varsity, 61 North Ave NW, 404-881-1706. Not only do they serve up a rapid fast chili dog, but you'll also find onion rings, hamburgers, french fries, chocolate milk, and frosted oranges, which taste kind of like a liquid dreamsicle. Rather fill up on barbecue? Then you'll want to head instead to Rolling Bones BBQ, 377 Edgewood Ave SE, 404-222-2324. Here you'll find Texas style barbecue including yummy brisket, smoked ribs, pit grilled chicken, chopped pork, hot link beef, and all the traditional sides, plus peach cobbler to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Are you feeling adventurous? Then get ready to explore some neat ethnic restaurants in Atlanta. Just a few of your choices include the Abbay Ethiopian Restaurant, 3375 Buford Hwy. N, 404-321-5808; the Bangkok Thai Restaurant, 1492 Piedmont Ave, 404-874-2514; Benihana of Tokyo, 229 Peachtree St. N, 404- 522-9627; the Caribbean Restaurant, 180 Auburn Ave NE, 404-658-9829; and the Imperial Fez Moroccan Restaurant, 2285 Peachtree St., 404-351-0870.

Or you can enjoy the dishes at the Shamshirl Restaurant, 215 Copeland Rd. N, 404-851-9566; the South of France, 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road NE, 404-325-6963; or Rio Bravo Cantina, 3172 Roswell Rd. NE, 404-262-7431. If Italian is your favorite, then you won't want to miss Antica Posta Tuscan Restaurant, 519 East Paces Ferry Rd NE (look for the yellow house), 404-262-7112, open at 4:00pm. Featured in Southern Living's Off the Eaten Path, a visit here will give you a chance to enjoy their handmade pastas, panna cotta, and Torta Caprese al cioccolato for dessert.

Is breakfast your favorite meal of the day? Then start your morning off with a smile and a hot Krispy Creme Doughnut, 295 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, 404-876-7307. Other great treat choices include Gorin's Homemade Ice Cream, 4058 Peachtree Rd., 404-266-8823; the Joli Kobe French Bakery, 5600 Roswell Rd. N, 404-843-3257; and the Willis Bakery, 477 Flat Shoals Ave, 404-524-4650.

If you'd love some fresh goodies to take back to your rig, then head to the Atlanta State Farmer's Market, 16 Forest Pkwy., Forest Park, GA, 404-366-6910. Here you'll be tempted by fresh produce, flowering plants, jams, and preserves, and all sorts of other yummies. But slip on your most comfy shoes before heading out because this farmer's market holds the bragging rights to being the largest outdoor market in the US. Or you can head to Your DeKalb Farmer's Market, 3000 East Ponce de Leon Ave, Decatur, GA, 404-377-6400, where you'll find fruits, veggies, fresh seafood, a deli, flowers, coffee, breads, and an international array of cheeses, spices and meats.

If you love the convenience of cafeteria dining, you'll enjoy stopping by the Austin Ave Buffet, 918 Austin Ave NE, 404- 524-9274; and the S & S Cafeteria, 2000 Campbellton, 404-755-2005. Is your tummy in a hurry? Then just start driving down Peachtree Rd., Piedmont Ave, or Roswell Rd., and you're bound to spot a fast food restaurant to please you.

On the other hand if you can stand to wait a bit make the quick 10 mile drive to Tucker, GA and Matthew's Cafeteria, 2229 Main Street, 770-939-2357. Featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show this home cooking haven features such goodies as homemade cheese biscuits, fried chicken, meat loaf, breakfast grits, turnip greens, egg custard pie, and banana pudding.
