If you like to combine your shopping with good food and entertainment,
you'll want to start your shopping adventure at Underground Atlanta,
Peachtree at Alabama Streets, 404-523-2311. As you stroll this
6-block shopping area you'll find yourself transported back to
the Victorian era. In the 1920s, the city folks felt the need
for some improvements so they built viaducts right over these
original buildings. The merchants naturally moved upstairs and
this area was pretty much ignored until the 1960s when some clever
people saw its potential. Here you'll find sights like Atlanta
Heritage Row along with 100+ neat stores, entertainment emporiums,
and street-cart merchants.
If you want to do some upscale shopping head to the toney
Buckhead area, north of Atlanta, where you'll find 1,000 retail
stores and 200 restaurants and night clubs waiting to entertain
you and your credit card. As you wander this area you'll run
onto upscale stores like Timberland, 404-261-0460; Successories,
404-240-0906; Nike Town, 404-841-6444; The Museum Company, 404-365-8022;
Gucci, 404-233-4899; and Gianni Versace, 404-814-0664. Another
fun stop is the Westside Urban Market area, 1200 Howell Mill
Rd, 404-872-7538. Here you will find fun stores like G. Gilbert,
404-355-3713; Owen Lawrence, 404-869-7360; Terra Cottage, 404-350-0330;
and Savvy Snoot, 404-355-1399.
Antique lovers had better grab some smelling salts because
they may feel faint once they hit Chamblee's Antique Row, Broad
Street and Peachtree Road, Chamblee, GA, 770-458-1614, and find
themselves surrounded by over 200 antique dealers. You'll find
these unique shops tucked in historic homes, churches, and store
fronts, some as old as the mid-1800s. You'll find more neat historic
finds at the Old Mill Antique Village, 3240 East Ponce de Leon
Ave, Scottsdale, GA, 404-292-0223.
Now if you are going to be in town during the 2nd weekend
of the month, you need to check out Lakewood
Antiques. This is a huge monthly sale with 1,500 dealers
from around the country scattered over 13 acres.
If you don't mind taking a short drive, head to Buford, GA
and the Artist's Colony, Main Street, 770-945-9718. As you wander
through this downtown area you'll find it has been turned into
an artist haven with contemporary artists and craftspeople offering
their creations in the little shops and galleries scattered throughout
town. You'll also find they have a Buford History Museum and
Distinctive Collections, 37 E Main Street, 770-945-1660, where
you can learn more about the history of this area; and the Lanier
Museum of Natural History, 2601 Buford Dam Road, 770-945-3543,
with exhibits on local animals, rocks, fossils, and plant life.
If you prefer to create your own treasures, you'll want to
head to Pearl Artist & Craft Supply, 3756 Roswell Rd. N,
404-233-9400; and Strings & Strands, 4632 Wieuca Rd. NE,
404-252-9662. Do you prefer to play with threads and needles?
Then you'll find what you are looking for at Calico Corners,
