CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-35 & I-80
APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 191,293
In 1843 the government sent troops to the junction of the
Raccoon and Des Moines River to build a fort. Two years later
the area was opened to white settler who built up towns named
East Des Moines and Fort Des Moines. In 1857 the two Des Moines
got together and decided to merge and drop their "first
names."
