SIGHT SEEING

A fun place to start your Abilene sight seeing tour is the Abilene Civic Center, 201 N 2nd, 785-263-2231. This restored 1928 U P Depot is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and saw President Eisenhower take many a trip. Does being in a depot make you long for a ride on the rails? Then head out to the Abilene Smoky Valley Railroad, 1705 Beekman Pl, 785-263-1077 for reservations, where you can take an 18-mile ride on a 100-year-old wooden coach and diner.

To get a feel for Abilene's refined history visit some of its lovely old homes. A visit to the Lebold Vahsholtz Mansion, W First at Vine, 785-263-4356, for appointment, will give you a chance to see a 23-room Victorian Mansion which was built for C H Lebold in 1880. A trip to the Seelye Mansion, 1105 N Buckeye, 785-263-1084, gives you a chance to see a 25-room Georgian mansion. This home was built in 1905 by A B Seelye, who made his money in patten medicines. Along with the restored home you will be treated to exhibits on a turn-of-the-century medicine business.

A visit to the Kirby House, 205 NE 3rd at Kirby Ave, 785-263-7336, holds a double treat. Not only will you get to see a lovely restored 1885 mansion but they also serve lunch and dinner. To see even more of Abilene's historic homes stop at the Civic Center and pick up a copy of the Little Town of Mansions brochure, Heritage Homes Association, 412 S Campbell, 785-263-2681. Here you will find over 20 more homes, along with their histories, that you can drive by.

If you remember the joy of riding a carousel, you'll want to visit the C W Parker Carousel, at the Dickinson Co. Historical Museum, 412 S Campbell, 785-263-2681. The C W Parker Carousel Company made hand carved carousels and carnival equipment in Abilene around the turn of the century. Here you'll find one of their hand carved working carousel where every detail is a work of art.
