ABILENE Camping Events Good Food History Museums Shopping Sight Seeing Sports/Golf Tips for Travelers For More Info Return to State Index Recommend this site to your RVing friends SITES CLOSE BY Just an hour and a half away you'll find the Kansas capitol of Topeka. Here you can enjoy the Combat Air Museum, the Kansas Museum of History, the Reinisch Rose Gardens, the State Capitol Building, the Topeka Zoo, and the Gage Park Complex.
To the east of Abilene on I-70, you'll find Junction City, KS, and Fort Riley, the Geary County Historical Museum, the Kaw Valley Trail, the South Timber Creek Trail, the Custer House, and the US Cavalry Museum.
If you are heading down I-70 to the west, you will see Salina, KS, which is home to the Smoky Hill Museum, the Rolling Hills Ranch and Wildlife Conservation Center, the Central Kansas Flywheels Museum, the Oakdale Stage, and the Salina Bicentennial Center. If you hear your tummy grumbling in Salina drop by the Cozy Inn, 108 N 7th St, 785-825-9407, for a hamburger. I hear they are great.
Also west of Abilene down I-70 is the little town of Ellis, KS. Here you'll find a small city run campground with 12 spaces right on the banks of Big Creek, the Ellis Railroad Museum, the Bukovina Society of the Americas Museum, the boyhood home and museum of Walter P. Chrysler of auto fame, and some fun shopping downtown including the characters for sale at Forgotten Cotton Creations.
