One of the oldest settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains, Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark. Thankful for the French help during the American Revolution, the town decided to name itself after Louis IV of France. During the 1800s it was know as a transportation hub, shipping goods both by river and rail.
