In 1604, Samuel de Champlain explored this region for France but the area was not settled until 165 years later in 1769. How did it get its name? A local minister thought that it would be good to name it after the "Bangor Hymn."
As Bangor entered the 1800s, more and more loggers and lumber mills were drawn to the area by its thick forest. Soon Bangor was shipping so much wood down the Penobscot River that it gained the nickname "lumber capital of the world."
