A visit to the Old Town Museum, North Fourth Street Extension, Old Town area, will give you a chance to learn more about Maine's lumbering heyday during the 1800s.To see this history come alive visit the Leonard's Mills Maine Forest and Logging Museum, 403 Main, Bradley, ME, 207-866-0811. On the same spot a 1797 sawmill used to be, you'll now find a covered bridge, working sawmill with water wheel, a mill pond, a saw pit, a blacksmith shop, and a trapper's line cabin. If you're lucky enough to be in the area on the 2nd weekend in July or the 1st and 2nd weekends of October, you can enjoy Living History Days, where period re-enactors make history come alive.
Next you'll want to head to the Cole Land Transportation Museum, 405 Perry Road, 207-990-3600, where you'll find snow plows, wagons, cars, trucks, sleds, fire engines, and rail equipment that earned its living during the 19th and 20th centuries by hauling, clearing, and putting out fires for Maine folks.
If you love art, you'll want to head to the University of Maine Museum of Art, Norumbega Hall, 40 Harlow St, 207-561-3350, while you are in the area. It can boast a permanent collection of 4,500 works of art including those by Picasso, Warhol, Goya, Wood, and Andrew Wyeth.
