You'll be able to imagine how grand the early day lumber barons lived as you pass by these Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, and Second Empire Italian style homes.
To continue your history tour head to St. John's Catholic Church, 207 York Street, 207-942-6941, where you'll see some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in existence. Don't let the outside appearance of the windows fool you--they are covered with protective material and only show their beauty inside. After settling in Bangor, a group of Irish immigrants built this church in 1855 with the windows imported from Austria in 1876. Now listed on the National Historic Places list, the church was refurbished in 1991. For another outstanding site, take a trip to the Bangor Auditorium on Main Street. Out front you'll find Paul Bunyan's Statue. This 31-foot tall statue was placed here in 1959 by local citizens in honor of the fact that Paul Bunyan was "born" here in 1834.
If you like your sight seeing to involve rails or water you're in luck between Mother's Day and the October fall foliage season. This is when you'll find the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad, in business since 1867, has daily two 1/2 hour trips between Belfast and Unity Maine. And don't panic and start hiding your valuables when you hear a ruckus up ahead. It's probably just the Waldo Station Gang ready to give you some old time thrills. If you want to hop on the Mississippi Riverboat Voyageur, it will take you on a nice leisurely ride along the Penobscot River. If both of these sound like fun, you can save by buying a Rail and Sail Combo. For reservations and schedules call 207-948-5500.
