You'll find a lot of smaller towns situated right around Bangor. Orono is home to the University of Maine along with University sports and a planetarium. Old Town, one of the stops along the railroad hiking trail, is home to the Penobscot Indian Nation and has some great fishing where the Penobscot River and Pushaw Stream intersect. At the Penobscot Indian Reservation, 5 River Road, you'll find wonderful woven baskets and leather goods.

I would highly recommend taking a day trip to the Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. A good first stop is the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, at the Hulls Cove Entrance, 207-288-3338. After viewing their exhibits, you'll want to start along the Park Loop Road, where you will enjoy beautiful vistas as you pass by the Wild Gardens of Acadia, the Nature Center, the Abbe Museum, and Jordan House Pond. We took two days exploring the area so that we could see the views both day and night. If you'd like to do your sight seeing while someone else takes the reins, you'll enjoy one of the Acadia National Parks Carriage Road tours, Wildwood Stables, reservations, 207-276-3622. They offer a one hour Day Mountain Carriage tour, a two hour Cobblestone Bridge tour, a two hour Sunset Carriage Tour, a two hour tour to Jordan Pond House, and you can even charter a small carriage driven by one of their coachmen for a private tour.

For a little bit bigger town you can head to Freeport which is only 110 miles from Bangor. If you do stop in Freeport and are looking for a comfy pair of shoes, drop by J. L. Coombs (1830), Freeport Village, one block down Bow Street, 207-865-4557. They carry Mephisto shoes, along with Dansko, Ecco, Sebago, UGG, Minnetonka, and Rieker plus 30 other European brands.
