HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAY: Highway 3

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 4,500

When Samuel de Champlain sailed here in 1604, the island's granite faces caused him to name it Mount Desert Island. But after quickly claiming it for France, he sailed along. The next explorers to discover it were Native Americans and they didn't dismiss it so quickly. In fact all of its natural beauty and the bounty of food offered up by the sea caused them to decide to settle here.

In 1769, they were joined by some hearty pioneers, who founded a town and soon realized that the best way to make a living here was to cater to the needs of the explorers, artist, and then finally wealthy folks who decided beginning in the 1820s, that this would be a dandy place to retreat for the summer.
