SIGHT SEEING

Start your sight seeing adventure with a visit to the Henry Ford Estate--Fairlane, 4901 Evergreen Road, 313-593-5590. Here you can tour the 56 room mansion with its 300-foot underground tunnel to its own power plant, eight different intricate fireplaces, some carved with Henry's own philosophies, and pool room with steam heated benches and rare Swedish green marble where you can now enjoy lunch in the Pool Restaurant.

Then head outdoors and explore the footpaths, rose gardens, terraced paths along the Rouge River, gardens, grottos, teahouses, and Henry Ford's favorite path down to Jensen's Meadow. Next you can marvel at the six level power house that Henry Ford and Thomas Edison built to insure that Fairlane always had its own power, heat, and light. And before you leave, take a peek into the two room miniature farmhouse that Ford had built for the 1924 Michigan State Fair. Since it already had its own tiny furniture and cast-iron stoves he thought his grand kids might enjoy playing in it so he moved it to Fairlane for them to use as a playhouse after the fair ended. Gosh and just think, as a kid my grandparents conned me into thinking I was happy playing house in a big cardboard box!
