GOOD FOOD

I think it's probably illegal to visit Santa Fe without eating Mexican food at least once. And with so many good restaurants to choose from, why would you want to? Your options include the Coyote Cafe, 132 W Water Street, 505-983-1615, which serves modern Southwestern cuisine; or La Casa Sena, 125 E Palace, #20 Sena Plaza, 505-988-9232, which has over 700 wines. Peppers Restaurant and Cantina, 2239 Old Pecos Trail, 505-984-2272, advertises the most fantastic view around and its famous Margarita pie, while the Old Mexico Grill, 2434 Cerrillos Road, 505-473-0338, offers their regional dishes delicately seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. One of our American Journeys RVers says you can't go wrong with the great food at Maria's New Mexican Kitchen, 555 W Cordova Rd, 505-983-7929. Said to have invented the breakfast burrito, you'll also enjoy a visit to Tia Sophia's, 210 W San Francisco, 505-983-9880.

Jim and I enjoyed lunch at Josie's Casa De Comida, 225 E Marcy, 505-983-5311. Located in a white house on a side street off the square, it is only open Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They have a great combination plate plus wonderful homemade pies served with real whipped creme. If you are a fan of Frito pie, you'll want to head on over to the Five and Dime General Store, 58 E San Francisco St, 505-992-1800; or if you are heading on the High Road to Taos, stop at Leona's Restaurante.

Or for a great breakfast drop by the Famous Plaza Cafe, 54 Lincoln Ave, 505-982-1664; or the Horseman's Haven Cafe, 4353 Cerrillos Rd, 505-471-5420, for one of their yummy breakfast burritos. Another great choice is Clafoutis French Bakery & Restaurant, 402 Guadalupe, 502-988-1809. Here you will find case after case of tempting pastries bound to put a smile on your face.

When you finally need a break from all that spice, you can depend on the Luby's, 4250 Cerrillos Rd, 505- 473-7084, or Furr's Cafeteria, 522 W Cordova Rd., 505-982-3816, for a hearty meal. If breakfast is your favorite meal of the day, one of our American Journeys RVers thinks you'll find happiness at The Pantry Restaurant, 1820 Cerrillos Rd, 505-982-0119. If pizza is what you crave, you'll find happiness at Upper Crust Pizza, 329 Old Santa Fe Trail, 505-982-0000.

Fans of Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives will be happy to learn that two restaurants featured on the show are in Santa Fe. A visit to Harry's Roadhouse, 96-B Old Las Vegas Highway, 505-989-4629, for breakfast will give you a chance to enjoy their lemon ricotta pancakes or a yummy cinnamon roll. Or if you hit there later in the day you can try one of their other great choices like barbecued ribs, turkey cheese enchiladas or Moroccan stew. While a visit to the Tune-Up Cafe, 1115 Hickox St, 505-983-7060, will give you a chance to try enjoy their stuffed French toast, corn beef hash, beef pupusas, banana leaf tacos, or chiles rellenos. Another wonderful breakfast or lunch choice is Cafe Pasqual's, 121 Don Gaspar Ave, 505-983-9340, 8:00am-3:00pm. Here everything is both organic and hand made like their Maga's cheese blintzes, smoked trout hash, grilled green chile cheese burger, and yummy daily desserts.

If you don't mind driving a little bit (about 25 miles north of town off I-25, head to the El Resturante Rancho de Chimayo, Santa Fe County Rd 98, Chimayo, NM, 505-351-4444. Housed in an 1890s adobe brick building, this restaurant features Chimayo chili peppers, carne avada, and wonderful chicken enchiladas. Or head toward Taos and Espanola, NM where you'll find the local's favorite, Angelina's Restaurant, 1226 N Railroad Ave, 505-753-8543.
