But outdoors is where you'll find some of the more interesting items. For over 400 years, artisans have sold their wares outside the Palace of the Governors and today this tradition is still upheld. Here, under the covered porch, you will have a chance to negotiate with Native Americans for turquoise jewelry, handcrafted Pueblo pottery, and other native crafts. If you are visiting during July or August you are in for a special treat. For one weekend in July you'll find wonderful creations at the Spanish Market, while an August trip will give you a chance to plan your visit to coincide with the Indian Market weekend.
For more great local items, you'll want to head a little way out of town. The Santa Fe Flea Market is located 4 miles north of downtown on St. Francis Drive (US 84/285) and is open from 7:00 a.m. till dusk Friday through Sunday, February to Thanksgiving. Here you will be tempted by open air stalls selling everything from jewelry to antique cowboy boots. When you spot something you want, once again try on your negotiating skills and see if you can't bring home with a bargain.
If you don't find what you want there, then head on out to the Tesuque Pueblo Flea Market, 15 Flea Market Rd, 505-670-2599. Open March through December on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a visit here will give you a chance to be tempted by rugs, jewelry, paintings, baskets, carvings, fresh produce, tasty food and more. Love farmer's markets? Then you'll want to be sure and visit the Santa Fe Farmers Market, 1607 A Paseo de Peraltia, 505-983-4098. But since their days and times vary check out their web site before heading out so you don't end up disappointed.
Who would think that an old burro trail could provide so much fun? Well on Canyon Road you will find more than 100 galleries, shops, and restaurants to tempt you. The road is very narrow but there is public parking so it's more fun to park and walk than to drive. Plan to wear comfortable shoes as this shopping district covers almost seven blocks. Not only will you get to see stores offering sculptures, jewelry, Native American goods, quilts, and fine custom belts, but the buildings alone make the area worth touring.
Another fun place to shop is the Plaza Mercado, 112 West San Francisco Street, 505-988-5792. Here you'll find 45 shops with names like Romancing the Stone, the Blue Rose, Peaceful Winds, and the Tribes Coffee House. If looking at all of Santa Fe's fine handwork makes you feel crafty, you'll find a Hobby Lobby 2020 Cerrillos Rd, 505-471-1199. Bargain hunters will be happy to bag some trophies at the Santa Fe Premium Outlets, exit 278, 8380 Cerrillos Road, 505-474-4000.
Just need to restock your pantry and fridge? Then you'll want to grab your shopping list and head to Kaunes Grocery 208 Washington Ave, 505-983-7378; Pueblo Plaza Super Market, Pojoaque Pueblo, 505-455-2178; or Wal-Mart, 3251 Cerrillos Rd, 505-474-4727.
