HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-71, I-77, & I-90

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 495,817

In 1796 the Connecticut Land Company sent Moses Cleaveland out to explore this area. As so often happened the settlement was named in his honor, but in 1832 when his name was too long for a newspaper masthead they dropped the "a." So much for posterity!

Slow to grow, the completion of the Ohio Canal, the shipping of iron ore and coal, and the founding of an oil refinery in 1862 by John D. Rockefeller, Sr. finally pushed Cleveland's population from 17,034 in 1850 to 560,663 in 1910.
