TIPS FOR TRAVELERS

Situated in the high-desert country, with fewer than 12-inches of rain a year, you'll find plenty of blue skies in Bend. Though it's warm and dry during the day, the nights cool quickly, so it's a good idea to pack at least one wind breaker and a couple of sweatshirts.

If you are use to an elevation lower than Bend's 3,628 feet above sea level, you may experience some side effects from the high altitude. What are some of the effects? You may feel lightheaded, dizzy, thirsty, have headaches, breathing problems, sleeplessness, or heart palpations. To make you high altitude experience more pleasurable make sure to drink plenty of water, plan your first couple of days to include lots of rest periods so your body has time to adjust, and avoid alcohol because one drink in at higher elevations can equal three drinks at sea level. If you are under a doctor's care, it is also a good idea to let him or her know you are planning a trip that will include higher elevations. They may have additional tips or wish to change medication levels, etc.

Does one of your traveling companions consider chasing a ball a grand form of aerobic exercise? Then you'll be glad to know that, in case of an emergency, you can contact the vets at the Alpine Veterinary Clinic, 61230 S Hwy. 97, 541-382-8930; or the Cascade Veterinary Hospital, 61535 S Hwy. 97, 541-389-6612.
