HISTORY
CLOSEST FREEWAY: Highway 97
APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 50,000
Used since the 1820s by pioneers because it was an easy place
to ford the river, Bend was officially founded by A M Drake in
1900. Originally named Farewell Bend, the postal authorities
though this too cumbersome and shortened it just to Bend. With
the arrival of the railroad in 1911 and lumber mills in 1914,
Bend was insured of a long future.
