A visit here will also give you a chance to see a slide show of the area's history, and wander interpretive trails around the crater, over the lava flow, and through the pine forest.
If you are a sucker for water falls and don't mind a little walking, drive 4 miles past the Lava Lands Visitor Center along a cinder road to the picnic area. Then walk downstream to your right and cross the footbridge about 1 mile to Benham Falls. After all this work, don't forget to bring your camera for some spectacular pictures of untamed white water.
Another great way to see the area is to take the 87-mile Cascades Lakes Highway. This highway loop gives you wonderful views of Mt Bachelor, the Three Sisters, and Broken Top. Before you start out, stop by the Bend Chamber of Commerce for a brochure explaining the sites you'll see along the way.
To learn more about the history of the area, visit the Des Chutes Historical Center, 129 NW Idaho, 541-389-1813. Here you will see Native American artifacts, a pioneer school room, historic photos, and exhibits on the timber industry. For something a little unique follow Hwy. 97 north out of town about 9 miles, turn left on 61st Street, and follow the signs to the Petersen Rock Garden and Museum. Looking for a hobby, the late Mr. Peterson spend 17 years creating a 40-acre park of miniature bridges, towers, terraces, and buildings, each intricately made from rocks. You'll also find a museum, small picnic area, lily pond, information on rock hounding in the area, and peacocks to keep you company during your visit.
