If you are traveling here during August, you'll want to check
out the great Sunriver Music Festival in Sunriver, OR, which
is just 15 miles south of Bend. To get a schedule of events write
or call the Sunriver Chamber of Commerce, P O Box 3246, Sunriver,
OR, 97707-2344, 541-593- 8149.
North of Bend on I-97 is Redmond OR, where you'll find the
Crooked River Dinner Train, 4075 NE ONeil Rd 541-548-8630; the
Eagle Crest Resort's two championship golf courses, and, in August,
the Deschutes County Fair.
While in Redmond you might want to drive to 4355 W Hwy. 126
to see Reindeer Ranch Operation Santa Claus. This is the world's
largest commercial reindeer ranch and is home to over 100 domesticated
reindeer. Now I don't know for sure that Santa gets his reindeer
trainees here, but it probably wouldn't hurt to whisper your
name and that you've been good if you see one of them looking
at you extra close.
For more outdoor fun, head to the Osprey Observation Point
Area at Crane Prairie Reservoir, 45 miles southwest of Bend along
the Cascade Lakes Highway. Started in 1969 this is one of the
best places to see Osprey nesting areas in the US, with the most
frequent sightings taking place during the summer months.
