HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-5 & I-84

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 503,891

In 1845 a bunch of settlers got together and decided to set up a town. When faced with choosing a name, one of the pioneers suggested Portland, after his home town of Portland, Maine.

Just five years later, town folk found themselves in the business of supplying pans, picks and work clothes to gold prospectors heading for California. When gold was found in the Klondike region of Alaska in the 1890s, Portland was ready to play this role again.
