Next door you'll find the World Forestry Center, 4033 SW Canyon Road, 503-228-1367. Since forestry is so important to Portland you may want to drop by and learn more about forestry management, world forest, and forest resources through displays like the 70-foot-tall talking Douglas fir and century old Jessup Collection. For more outdoor fun hop a ride on the Mount Hood Railroad, 110 Railroad Ave, Hood River, OR, 541-386-3556, 800-872-4661. They offer scenic trips on 1910-1920 Pullman coaches through the beautiful Hood River Valley.
A stop plant lovers are going to want to make is the International Rose Test Gardens, Washington Park, which is the oldest operating rose test garden in the US. They have 500 varieties of blooms and signature plaques of nearly 80 years of Rose Festival queens lining the walkways. Just up the hill you'll be transported to another world as you visit the Japanese Garden, 611 SW Kingston Ave, 503-223-1321. As you stroll through its five and 1/2 acres, you'll find a waterfall, pools, stone channels, and an authentic tea house. Continuing your outdoor journey along this uphill path will take you to the Hoyt Arboretum, which features the largest conifer species in the US.
Another relaxing stop is the Grotto, Sandy Boulevard at NE 8th, 503-254-7371. Here you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of an internationally known Catholic sanctuary and 62 acre botanical garden, in addition to touring their natural woods gallery and gift shop.
There are two more areas you'll want to explore while in Portland, the Columbia Gorge and Mount Hood. A fun way to enjoy the beauty of the Columbia Gorge area is driving along the Historic Columbia River Highway and stopping at whatever catches your fancy. Just 50 miles from Portland, Mount Hood National Forest has trails, ski resorts, mountain climbing, hiking trails, and great fishing in Lost Lake and Crystal Lake. Before you head out to explore these two areas be sure and drop an extra roll of film in your pocket so you can take plenty of beauty home with you.
If you'd like to see some of Portland's history visit the Pittock Mansion, 3229 NW Pittock Drive, 503-823-3624. Built in 1914 by Henry Pittock, the original owner of the Oregonian newspaper, a tour of this fine mansion will give you an idea of what we used to mean when we used the word "quality."
Another way to learn about Portland's history is to visit the Mission Mill Village, 1313 Mill St. SE, Salem, OR, 503-585-7012. As you tour this village, you'll see a restored 1890s woolen mill, missionary homes, and a church. You'll also find a cafe on the grounds in case all this history makes you hungry.
