If you'd like to learn more about Pennsylvania history make the short 35 mile drive to Harrisburg and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Box 1026, Harrisburg, north of Gettysburg, 717-787-4978. Here you'll find exhibits detailing the state's history and growth plus a special exhibit, The Keystone of the Union, which covers the part the battle in Gettysburg played in the Civil War. For more Civil War history, drive about fourteen miles to Hanover, PA, Rt. 116 East. This is where the first Civil War battle north of the Mason-Dixon line took place.
Just 10 miles south of Gettysburg you'll find the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Basilica, 333 South Seton Ave, Emmitsburg, Maryland, 301-447-6606. In addition to the shrine, you'll find historic buildings on the grounds.
Also during your stay in Gettysburg you are only 52 miles from Hershey, Pennsylvania and the Hershey Gardens, the Hershey Museum, and most importantly to us chocolate lovers, Hershey's Chocolater World Visitors Center. Yes they do have a tour and give away samples. And my oh my, what a wonderful gift shop they have!
You are also just 54 miles from Baltimore where you'll find Fort McHenry National Monument, the birthplace of Babe Ruth, the Basilica of the Assumption, the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the National Aquarium, the Peale Museum and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum.
Gettysburg is also just 78 Miles from Washington, D.C. and the White House, Capitol Building, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Georgetown, the Arlington National Cemetery, and the must see Smithsonian. A stress free way to see DC is by riding with the folks at Dayton's Tours, 800-763-2434. They offer guided bus tours that pick up at most RV parks. Then they will whisk you away on a great day with stops at sites like Arlington National Cemetery, the War Memorials, the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian, and the Washington National Cathedral. You'll also have a chance to see sights like the White House, Ford's Theater, the Supreme Court, the FBI Building, and Library of Congress as you tour the town.
