HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-26 & I-526

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 87,044

Named in honor of Charles II, Charleston was first settled in 1670 and then moved to its present location 10 years later. A major shipping port, Charleston was known for its culture and sophistication during the 1700s.

Captured during the American Revolution, Charleston was again occupied by troops during the Civil War after suffering a 19-month siege. The discovery of phosphates in the area helped it rebuild after the war, but in 1886 its citizens were once again faced with adversity when a major earth quake damaged much of the city.
