MUSEUMS

You'll want to start your museum tour at the Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting St., 843-722-2996. During your visit to this first and oldest museum in the US (1773), you'll get to see a full sized replica of the Confederate submarine HUNLEY and learn about Charleston's history through displays of clothing, furniture, silver, games, vehicles, photos, and animal and plant life. If you are traveling with kids, don't worry. They will find plenty to keep them busy in the Discovery Room.

Another great stop for children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years is the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, 25 Ann St, 843-853-8962. Here they can have fun and learn while exploring one of the neat hands on exhibits like the Shrimp Boat, Creativity Castle, or Totally Toddler.

History buffs will enjoy a visit the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, hanger deck of the USS YORKTOWN, 843-884-2727. Here you'll get to learn about the Medal of Honor, our highest award for valor in action, see a list of all of the Medal of Honor recipients, and see memorabilia and artifacts relating to the Medal of Honor. You'll also have a chance to see the YORKTOWN aircraft carrier, the LAFFEY destroyer, and the CLAMAGORE submarine. I'd suggest at least half a day to explore all of these and wear comfy shoes with good gripping soles as you'll be climbing up and down steps.

To continue on your history museum tour you can drop by the Citadel Museum, and the Confederate Museum. At the Citadel Museum, Citadel Campus, 800-868-DAWG, you'll learn about this school's history from 1842 to the present day through exhibits and photos. The Confederate Museum, 34 Pitt St., 843-723-1541, is housed in Market Hall which was built in 1841. Opened by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1898, this museum has flag, uniform, sword, and other Confederate memorabilia exhibits.

Art lovers will want to set aside some time to tour the Gibbes Museum of Art, 135 Meeting St., 843-722-2706. Here you'll find a fine collection of American paintings, prints, and drawings from the 18th century to present day. If you're looking for that special gift, you'll want to drop by their gift shop which specializes in posters, cards, jewelry, books, and children's goodies.
