HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAY: I-90

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 14,386

As the magic of rail road transportation reached South Dakota in the late 1800s rail stops began to pop up to accommodate the needs of the crew and future travelers. In 1881, Mitchell was born to meet this need. How did it get its name? The rail road president at the time was Alexander Mitchell and my guess is that some enterprising employee made the choice in hopes of scoring some points with the big boss.
