HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-40 & I-55

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 603,507

As early as 1541 Spanish explorers were roaming this area, but it wasn't until the French built Fort Assumption in 1739 that white settlement began. In 1763 the fort passed to British hands and in 1797 the United States decided to build its own fort in the area. Because of its great river location, Andrew Jackson, who was later to become president, and two partners founded the town and named it Memphis after Memphis, Egypt. The river once again played an important part in Memphis' history during the Civil War. An important Confederate port, it was captured by Union troops in 1862 and occupied until the end of the war.
