SIGHT SEEING

Your friends probably won't believe you if you tell them you came to Memphis and didn't visit the "King." So even if you're not a fan (and shame on you if that's true), you might as well head to Graceland, 3734 Elvis Presley Blvd., 800-238-2000, where you can choose from tours of the mansion, trophy building, Meditation Garden, automobile museum, and private jets or choose the tour which includes all of the above, for only a few bucks more.

Once you've finished your Elvis pilgrimage, you can enjoy the Memphis Belle B-17, the Memphis Zoo and Aquarium, and the Sun Studio. A trip to the Memphis Belle B-17, 8101 Hornet Ave, call for hours, 901-412-8071, will give you a chance to see WWII's most famous airplane. At the Memphis Zoo and Aquarium, 2000 Galloway Ave, 901-276-9453, 2,800 animals representing 400 species are waiting to entertain and educate you.

As any self-respecting rock and roll fan knows, Sun Studio, 706 Union Ave, 901-521-0664, is where Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B B King, Rufus Thomas, Muddy Waters, Carl Perkins, and Roy Orbison gave birth to the music that made 1950s teens grease their hair and shrink their jeans. For more music history, head to the Memphis Rock 'n Roll Soul Museum, 191 Beale St, 901-205-2533. A visit here will give you a chance to learn bout the region's music through videos, memorabilia, and listen to the tunes of area musicians as you tour its 7 galleries.

To continue your Memphis music tour, stop by the W.C. Handy Home & Museum, 352 Beale St, 901--527-3427. Known as the Father of the Blues, a visit to Handy's home will give you a chance to see both memorabilia and also gain an appreciation for his simple beginnings. Next head to the Gibson Guitar Factory, 145 Lt. George W Lee Ave, 901-544-798 ex 4075, to take one of their hourly tours.

If the idea of visiting some of Memphis' oldest homes appeals to you, then head to the Magevney House, 198 Adams Ave, 901-526-4464; the Mallory-Neely House, 652 Adams Ave, 901-526-8666 (closed January & February); and the Woodruff-Fontaine House, 680 Adams Ave, 901-526-1469. And a visit to the 1849 Burke Estate, which is home to the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, 826 N Second St, 901-527-3427, with its cramped cellar where they hid, will bring history into sharper focus.

Once you finish your indoor tour, you may long for some fresh air and that's just what you'll find at the Lichterman Nature Center, 5992 Quince Rd., 901-767-7322. Here you can stretch your legs on the 3-mile trail, enjoy the beauty of the 10-acre lake, have a leisurely picnic lunch, and quietly watch wildlife in its natural habitat.

Another great stop for outdoor enthusiast is the Memphis Botanic Garden in Audubon Park, 750 Cherry Rd., 901-685-1566. Wandering this 96-acre outdoor garden will give you a chance to see a Japanese garden, a sensory garden, a sculpture garden, and azalea trails. They also have a plant information library, tropical conservatory, Boehm porcelain collection, and art exhibitions.

Now there is one last thing you should do on your Memphis sight seeing tour But before I tell you what it is, you've got to promise to read past the next sentence or you'll think I'm a few bricks short of a load. You need to go watch some ducks parading to the "King Cotton March." That's right, as crazy at it sounds this is exactly what takes place at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Peabody Hotel, 149 Union Ave, 901-529-4000. In fact this world-famous tradition is so popular you may want to get there a little early so you can stake out a spot close to the fountain where the little darlings march on their own red carpet to and from work. It's a fun Memphis tradition and one not to be missed if you feel like being silly.
