If you are going to be in this area in July, you might want to attend what sounds like a real interesting festival in Kenton, TN. This is when they hold the White Squirrel Homecoming Celebration, 901-749-5767 (now I'm not quite sure if this number connects you to an actual white squirrel or just a regular human). Also in July is the World's Oldest Bar-B-Que Cooking Contest, 901-476-9727, in Covington TN.

A trip to nearby Henning, TN will give you a chance to tour the boyhood home of Alex Haley. On the grounds of the Alex Haley House and Museum, 200 S Church St, 731-738-2240, you will find the burial sites of member of the Haley family including Alex Haley and Chicken George.

Making the short drive to Collierville, TN will give you a chance to not only tour a charming town but also visit the Biblical Resource Center & Museum,140 E Mulberry, 901-854-9578. Here you can enjoy an interactive exhibit titled How We Got the Bible, and view exact replicas of artifacts including the Rosetta Stone and Cyrus Cylinder. If your tummy starts growling while in town head to La Hacienda, 746 W Poplar Ave, 901-850-7698, for their chicken tacos.

If Casey Jones was a childhood hero, you'll want to drive to Jackson, TN and the Casey Jones Village and Old Country Store, 56 Casey Jones Lane, I-40/Highway 45 By-Pass, exit 80A, 731-668-1223. Not only will you get to see Casey Jones' home and 50-room Station Inn but you'll also be treated to a 1890s general store, a restaurant, a confectionary shop, and 15,000 antiques.
