You'll want to make one of your first stops in town the Pioneer Museum Complex, 309 W Main St., 830-997-2835. Here you'll find the small Kammlah pioneer home, a general store, a barn, smokehouse, the Walton-Smith log cabin, a turn-of-the-century house, the White Oak School, the fire department museum, and the Weber Sunday House.
Don't know what a Sunday house is? They were the small homes the German farmers built on their town lots to be used by their families when traveling to town for Sunday services. Usually they just had one room, a lean- to kitchen, and an upper loft accessible by an outside stairway or ladder.
Also don't forget to drop in at the National Museum of the Pacific War, 350 E Main, 830-997-43709, to view its George Bush Gallery, Plaza of Presidents, and History Walk. Here you'll also learn about Admiral Chester Nimitz, a native son, and visit the Museum of the Pacific War, the Japanese Garden of Peace, and the History Walk of the Pacific War. With over 30 exhibits be sure and set aside plenty of time to view the entire museum.
For more local history head to nearby Johnson City, TX where you'll find the Lyndon B Johnson National and State Historical Parks, which include the President's birthplace, the one room Junction School, the Johnson Settlement, the LBJ Ranch, and the Johnson Family cemetery where our 36th president is buried.
Before leaving town you'll also want to visit Gish's Old West Museum, 502 N Milam, 830-997-2794, call for appointment. Touring Joe Gish's log cabin will give you a chance to see spurs, chaps, vest, leather collars, rifles, pistols, saddles, boots, and about one hundred badges used in the old west. After you finish browsing, take a second to appreciate Charlene's landscaped flower gardens.
