HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-10, I-45, & I-610

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 1,786,691

The settlement John Harris started here in 1826 became known as Harrisburg. Ten years later, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna tore through town, destroying everything in his wake.

Seeing its potential, Augustus and John Allen, brother land speculators, started a new settlement that same year and named it after General Sam Houston who had defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The discovery of petroleum in 1901 and the completion of the Houston Ship Channel in 1914 added greatly to its growth.
