MUSEUMS

Art lovers will find happiness at the Museum of Fine Arts, the Cullen Sculpture Garden, and the Contemporary Arts Museum. At the Museum of Fine Arts, 1001 Bissonnet, 713-639-7300, you'll see art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Before you leave be sure and see the exhibit of African gold. A stop at the Cullen Sculpture Garden, across the street, will give you a chance to see works by Rodin, Maillol, and Hepworth.

Nearby you'll also find the Contemporary Arts Museum, 5216 Montrose Blvd., 713-284-8250. Don't expect to see any permanent collections here. They consider contemporary art to always be in a state of flux so the exhibits are constantly changing.

If you are drawn to surrealism and American art from the 1940s on, you'll want to visit the de Menil Collection, 1515 Sul Ross, 713-525-9400. This private collection built by Dominique and John de Menil features works by Pollack, Still, Warhol, and Rauschenberg to name just a few. For a little beauty for the eye and the soul visit the Rothko Chapel, 3900 Yupon Atsoras, 713-524-9839, complete with some of Rothko's paintings.

If you love the written word, you'll want to take time to visit the Museum of Printing, 1324 W Clay St, 713-522-4652, closed Mondays. Here you can see their Great Books of the World gallery including miniature books, antique printing presses, and printing artifacts from as early as 3,000 B.C.

You will also want to visit the Holocaust Museum, 5401 Caroline St., 713-942-8000, where you can view the videoed stories of Holocaust survivors, photos, and learn more about the Holocaust experience. Or head to the Museum of Health and Medical Science, 1515 Hermann Drive, 713-521-1515, where you can walk through the Amazing Body Pavilion, learn from 30 interactive audio and video kiosks, and roving discovery carts.

Another fun place for kids to explore is the Children's Museum, 1500 Binz, 713-522-1138. Here you'll find hands-on activities in history, science, culture, and the arts geared to spark the imaginations of kids from four months to 14 years old. They will also enjoy visiting the Museum of Health & Medical Science, 1515 Herman Dr, 713-521-1515. Here they can walk through the amazing Body Pavilion, take a hands on science class, and enjoy the Sensory Garden.

A visit to the Museum of Natural Science, One Hermann Circle Dr., 713-639-4629, will give you a chance to see one of the best exhibits of gems and minerals in the world, petroleum, a hands on children's gallery, the Challenger Center, the Wortham IMAX theatre film, natural history exhibits, the George Observatory (open 5:00-10:00 p.m. Saturdays), and the Burke Baker Planetarium, where the Dgistar will take you into outer space.

Another great feature of the Museum of Natural Science is its Cockrell Butterfly Center where you'll find thousands of free flying butterflies floating around you in a three level tropical conservatory. Next door you'll find the Brown Hall of Entomology, with enough creepy crawly specimens in its 3,000 square foot to make even the strongest of us feel a little weak in the knees.

Antique lovers will have a marvelous time at the Bayou Bend Museum of Americana, 1 Westcott St., Memorial Park, 713-639-7750. Here you'll find antique furniture, paintings, and decorative arts in the former mansion of millionaire Ima Hogg (guess you'll have to go now just to see if I made that up, won't you).

If you are drawn to the odd, head to the National Museum of Funeral History, where they like to say that "Any Day Above Ground is a Good Day", 415 Barren Springs Dr., 281-876-3063. Touring this museum will give you a chance to learn more about our American funeral customs, including fantasy coffins, coffin making, and 1800s embalming. Or stop by the Art Car Museum, 140 Heights Blvd, 713-861-5526, where their exhibits will fire up your imagination about creative and wacky ways to make your rig stand out from the crowd!

You won't want to leave town without first visiting Space Center Houston, 1601 NASA Road 1, take I-45 S, 800-972-0369, 281-244-2100. Here you can tour the Starship Gallery with its 1/5 scale replica of the space shuttle orbiter Endeavor, see a flight suit in the Astronaut Gallery, and visit the Destiny Theater for the documentary On Human Destiny. They have moon rock exhibits, a full scale mock-up of the space shuttle to explore, a Skylab training module, a briefing at Mission Status Center, and you can even try your hand at landing a shuttle with a neat computer simulation program.

But that's not all! You can also watch a film entitled To Be An Astronaut, and then tour the Mission Control Center, the Weightless Environment Training Facility and other behind the scenes areas depending on what's going on at the time of your visit. Though his inability to land the space shuttle simulation without crashing, ended Jim's dream of being an astronaut (no cracks about age limits), he throughly enjoyed himself and I would recommend this as a great way to spend the day.
