SIGHT SEEING

You can start your Houston history tour at the Heritage Society in Sam Houston Park, 1100 Bagby, downtown, 713-655-1912. Here, in the city's oldest park, you'll find eight historic buildings built between 1823 to 1905. As your guide takes you through the park, they will entertain you with the building's history, the types of folks who might have lived then, and Houston's history. Also on the grounds you'll find the Museum of Texas History, where you'll find artifacts and a historical film.

You'll find more history at the George Ranch Historical Park, 10215 FM 762, Richmond, TX, 281-545-9212. As you tour this 740-acre living history museum, you'll be transported back through time to the 1824-1939 period in Fort Bend County's history.

For outdoor beauty head the Forbidden Gardens, 23500 Franz Road, 281-347-8000. As you stroll through this garden, you'll learn about Chinese history, culture, and landmarks. Current exhibits include The Forbidden City, The Tomb of Emperor Qin, and The Lodge for Calming the Heart. In the planning stages are the Temple of Heaven, the Palace of Heavenly Purity, Multicolored Ponds, Beihai Park in Beijing, and the Emperor's Dining Room.

For more outdoor beauty head to Bayou Bend, 1 Wescott St, 713-639-7750, closed Mondays. Here you can tour the wonderful butterfly garden and formal gardens scattered around the former home of Miss Ima Hogg (no, I am not kidding).You'll also want to spend some time exporing the 12-acre Discovery Green, corner of McKinney & Crawford, 713-400-7336. Here you will find places to dine, outdoor concerts, and the Mist Tree, which is a great way to cool off during Houston's hot sumers.

Animal lovers will want to spend some time strolling through the Houston Zoological Gardens, in Hermann Park, 1513 N MacGregor, 713-523-5888, where they will find more than 3,000 beasties. Here you can enjoy the Tropical Bird House, the hippo-dome, the gorilla habitat, the large cat facility with its rare white tigers, the small cat facility, and a large exhibit of creepy, crawling things. Before you leave Hermann Park, you'll also want to spend some peaceful time in the Japanese Garden.

For wild life of the wet kind, head instead to the Downtown Aquarium, 410 Bagby St, 713-223-FISH. Here you'll find themed exhibits to explore like the Louisiana Swamp. If dodging gaiters works up an appetite don't worry, they can take care of your at their restaurant.

If you like to do your sight seeing twirling around on exciting rides, you'll want to head to Six Flags AstroWorld, 9001 Kirby Dr., 713-799-1234, where you'll find 100 rides, including the Mayan Mindbender Indoor Roller Coaster. If you've ever wondered what happens to empty beer cans, head to the Beer Can House, 222 Malone, where you'll find 50,000 beer cans decorating the home of the late John Mikovisch.

Are you a fan of one of the sports teams that preforms at the Astrodome? Then you'll get a thrill out of taking an up close look at their playground, the Astrodome USA, 8400 Kirby Dr., Loop 610 South, call for tour times., 713-799-9834. A visit here will give you a chance to walk on Astroturf, watch an exciting video, and tour the press area, private executive suites, and the exclusive owner's lounge.
