It also has a Victorian era district, known as The Strand, the Galveston County Historical Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, the Texas Seaport Museum, and Moody Gardens with its rainforest, exotic plants, butterflies, birds, and bat exhibit.
Before leaving the Galveston area, you'll want to head to Old Seabrook, off Hwy. 146, 713-488-7676, where you'll find antique, craft, gift shops, and a tea room in a charming setting.
Another fun day trip will take you to Texas' Big Thicket Wilderness and the Alabama Coushatta Indian Reservation, Livingston, TX, about 40 miles north of Houston, 936-563-4391. The members of this 150-year-old settlement offer Indian Chief Trail Rides, a Big Thicket Tour, an Indian Country Tour, and a Living Indian Village and Tribal Dance.
Shoppers will want to make the 20 mile drive north to Old Town Spring, TX, 281-353-9310. Here you can explore 150+ shops offering antiques, clothing, crafts, keepsakes, and folk art. But plan on giving yourself some extra time because you won't be able to rush through stores like A Place In Time, Pete's Miniature Motors, Lookers, the Gentry Square Galleries, Goodwood's British Market, and Michelles.
Another fun shopping trip will take you to Kemah, TX. about 10 minutes from Space Center Houston. Here you'll find a fun Galveston Bay boardwalk with stores like And Everything Nice, Boat Shoes Unlimited, Island Threads, and the Enchanted Christmas Cottage. When you work up an appetite, you'll find plenty of choices like Churchill's Pub and Grill, the Flying Dutchman, and Joe's Crab Shack.
If you want to learn more about Texas history, head to La Porte, TX, off Hwy. 225 East, about 20 miles from downtown, 281-479-2421, and the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Park. Here you'll find a museum filled with historical exhibits and the San Jacinto Monument which offers rides to the top of its 50 story observation deck.
If you find yourself in the area of San Leon, Texas, head to the Topwater Grill,815 Ave 0, 281-339-1232. They serve great locally caught shrimp, oysters, and crab.
