Just a 27-mile drive will take you to South Padre Island where you'll find wonderful beaches, fun shopping, great food, a reminder of Ila Loetscher (the Turtle Lady), who dedicated her life to saving and rehabilitating giant sea turtles, and the South Padre Sealife Center, 110 N Garcia, 956-943-6626. If you hear your tummy grumble while in town, don't worry. Just rush on over to the Dolphin Cove Oyster Bar, Isla Blanca Park, 956-761-2850, where you'll find fresh oysters, shrimp, and fish and vegetables in spicy lime juice. Or try local favorite Dirty Al's, 1 Padres Blvd, 956-761-4901, for their great fish tacos, fried shrimp, and crab legs.

Nature lovers will want to make the 20 mile drive northeast of Brownsville to the Los Fresnos area where they'll find the 45,000 acre Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. Here you can hike, enjoy the visitor's center and museum, or just take a lazy 16-mile bay-side drive.

You are also very close to Mexico where you'll find fun shopping and unique restaurants. Before you head into Mexico make sure you understand the rules of what will be required of you to return across the border and your restrictions on what and how much you can bring back. I hesitate to put them here because if I forgot something important or if the rules changed you'd be real mad at me.
