American Journeys RV Travel Information
BURLINGTON SNAP-SHOT Return to State Index While exploring the Burlington area, you can park your rig at the Lone Pine Campsites, 52 Sunset View Road, Colchester, VT, 802-878-5447. Here you'll find level sites, two laundries, a swimming pool, sports courts, and an e-mail connection in the office.
The one thing you absolutely should not miss in this area is the Shelburne Museum, 5555 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, VT, 802-985-3346. As you wander its 45 acre grounds, complete with 18th and 19th century buildings filled to the brim with wonderful Americana, you may wonder how one woman, Electa Havemeyer Webb could possibly collect so much. Listening to the guides as you wander the Electra Havemeyer Webb Memorial Building will help give you some insight into this amazing woman's life. Next plan to spend at least two days exploring all of the wonderful exhibits including the Circus Building, the Horseshoe Barn and Hat & Fragrance Textile Gallery and Garden.
Another fun stop in Shelburne is the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, 6655 Shelburne Road, 802-985-1311. The tour only cost $2.00 and the corny jokes alone are worth that. Plus you get to see wonderful little teddies come to life and then visit their cousins in the gift shop. All of which would just love to hop a ride in your rig.
Now if their gift shop wets your appetite for shopping, head to the Kennedy Brothers Factory Marketplace, 11 W Main St, 15 miles south of Shelburne, Vergennes, VT, 802-877-2975. Here you will find an open air market with over 200 shops and booths filled with crafts, antiques, wooden ware, and original art. You'll also find wonderful Vermont gourmet foods to take back to friends.
If bargains are more your style, you'll want to spend some time at the Essex Outlet Fair, 21 Essex Way, Essex, Junction 802-878-2851. There is also fun shopping to be had in Burlington proper with its great stores like Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center, 85 Church Street, 802-863-6458, or Apple Mountain Vermont Gifts, 30 Church Street, 802-658-6452. In fact the whole Church Street area is a wonderful place to explore.
While in the Burlington area you'll also want to visit some of their other museums and attractions like the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, 1 Ethan Allen Homestead, 802-865-4556; Fort Ticonderoga, Ticonderoga, NY, 518-585-2821; and the Robert Hull Fleming Museum, 61 Colchester Ave, 802-656-0750.
And for the ultimate in sight seeing and yummy treats, don't leave until you've taken the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory Tour, Route 100, Stowe, VT, 866-BJ-TOURS. For a small fee, you'll get not only a 30 minute tour but also a tasty sample of one of their newest flavors. Naturally this gave us a yen to take some home. Lucky for us, they carry cartons and cartons right in the gift shop!
