HISTORY

CLOSEST FREEWAYS: I-94, I-43, & I-894

APPROXIMATE POPULATION: 610,700

When French missionaries first arrived here in the late 1600s, they were met by the Sauk, Ojibwa, Fox, Mascouten, Menominee, and Potawatomi tribes. In 1818 French-Canadian fur traders wandered through the area and decided to stay. Starting in the 1840s Milwaukee added German, Polish, Irish, Scandinavian, and Italian immigrants to its growing population. This wonderful ethnic diversity is still visible in Milwaukee's culture today.
